Carel Willink

Stately, enigmatic, elegant and the world at a distance, Carel Willink (1900-1983) is the cool grandmaster of neo-realism. From the age of thirty his reputation grew as an unparalleled painter of monumental, architectural sets and ominous skies. The arrangement in Kasteel Ruurlo shows the development of a searching artist, who later develops into the unrivaled painter of a technically perfect, elegant and enigmatic body of work. The collection in the castle is rotating, but there are always masterpieces by the master painter.

Fong Leng

Fashion designer Fong-Leng made a name for herself in the 1970s with extravagant creations. Colorful dresses and coats with animal appliqués, in leather and pleated silk, fur and rhinestones. The eccentric and colorful Mathilde de Doelder, third wife of realistic painter Carel Willink, was not only a good friend, but also one of Fong-Leng's most famous clients.

40 Years | Tussen Kunst en Kitsch

04.06.24 - 03.11.24

This exhibition is the 40th anniversary celebration of the television programme ‘Tussen Kunst en Kitsch’ (‘Between Art and Kitsch’), the Dutch equivalent of the British ‘Antiques Roadshow’. In the galleries, you will find a selection of the unique, amusing and spectacular objects that have featured on the popular TV show in the past four decades. The museum collaborated with the Dutch public broadcasting organisation AVROTROS to track down the owners of items that have been appraised by experts on the programme over the years, so that we could exhibit the art, antiques and curiosities in the castle. The personal stories that accompany the objects are what makes the TV show so special, and we were keen for these stories to feature in the exhibition.
